Weeks 1 & 2For MATH during week one and two, we have been covering Number Operations including whole number place value to the billions period and rounding.
Tomorrow, Thursday, we will also take our beginning of the year MATH test to collect data about each student. This will help us to establish a learning pathway that will help them to be the most successful they can be this year! For SCIENCE we began with a discussion on safety during lab activities. Then we started on our big unit topic of Matter. We will be spending some time on this topic and will be participating in various lab activities to support the students and their understanding of the topic. As far as building relationships and our classroom culture, the students are doing a fantastic job of deciding where they would like to sit each day and staying focused when they do pick to sit by friends. They are practicing their skills in decision making and organization. They have participated in group work and have interacted with their peers in meaningful ways! The DIY practice is going well, can't wait to see them all walk in Friday morning with the practice from this week. Students have brought in a few questions about some of the problems after reading over it. That allows us to discuss and see who might also have the same question and to clarify their thinking about the problem. It also allows them to be independent and practice asking questions when they are not understanding. I am proud of them!

August 20, 2018 - Our First Day BackOur first day back to school is August 20, 2018.
Breakfast in the cafeteria begins at 7:35 am. Doors open for students to enter at 7:50 am. (You are welcome to walk your child in on the first day, just remember parking will be limited and we will be getting to work right away.) Tardy bell rings at 8:10 am. All students should be in class. Dismissal will begin at 3:25 pm. If you are picking up your child in the car rider line, please remember to be patient the first week as our newest kindergarten friends are learning the procedure for afternoon dismissal in the car rider lines. Please have your car rider tag visible in the front window of your car. Please remember to put your cell phone away while pulling through the car rider line so every child is safe! Meet the Teacher Night 2018Meet the Teacher Night was a huge success! We had so many families come up to school to meet us and take a look at our classrooms. Lots of students purchased supply packs or brought in their supplies that night. They looked ready for fourth grade!
We look forward to staying in touch with you and sharing all the great things happening in fourth grade this year at Mahaffey Elementary. Please follow us on Twitter and check back here, on our website, often to see what is happening! The students will be publishing to our website very soon! Please come out to Mahaffey Elementary School and join us for meet the teacher! We can't wait to meet our Scottie Scholars of 2018-2019 and kick off this school year with them.
Sincerely, Tara Buck and Ashley Vara |
